Why is my hip stiff in the morning?
Stiffness that is worst first thing and loosens as you move often points to early hip arthritis. Resting overnight lets the joint settle, and the first movements feel tight until it warms up. Short lived morning stiffness is common, but if it lingers or comes with pain, it is worth understanding why.
Common symptoms
- Stiffness on waking that eases with movement
- Tightness getting out of bed or a chair
- Groin or thigh ache with early steps
- Reduced range reaching for shoes or socks
- Occasional grinding as the hip loosens
How it is diagnosed
A history of the stiffness pattern, with examination of your hip movement, usually points to the cause. A standing X-ray confirms whether arthritis is present and how advanced it is. Further imaging is rarely needed unless the picture is unclear or you are younger and active.
Your treatment options
Lifestyle and physiotherapy
Gentle mobility, strengthening and activity changes to ease stiffness.
Joint injections
Can calm an irritable joint and help confirm the source.
Hip replacement
Considered when stiffness and pain no longer respond to simpler care. See Hip Replacement surgery.
Mini hip replacement
A small incision option for suitable patients. See Mini Hip replacement surgery.
When should I seek help?
If morning stiffness is spreading into the day, or pain is creeping in, it is worth a conversation. Early advice keeps the simplest options open, and stiffness is often managed well long before surgery is ever discussed.
