Mr Mark Edmondson is a consultant orthopaedic hip and knee surgeon in Sussex, based at Nuffield Health Haywards Heath and Spire Montefiore Hospital, Hove. With 12 years as a consultant specialising in hip and knee surgery, and over 21 years in orthopaedics, he is fellowship trained in primary and complex revision hip and knee surgery, as well as trauma. How robotic knee replacement works

Robotic assistance does not replace the surgeon, it supports precision. Mr Edmondson uses two systems, MAKO, which plans from a CT scan, and CORI, which is imageless and maps your knee during surgery. A plan of your knee guides the robotic arm or burr while every decision stays with Mr Edmondson. The aim is accurate alignment and balance, using the same trusted implants as standard surgery.

When is the right time to consider a hip or knee replacement?

There is no single right moment. It is usually worth considering when pain limits your walking, sleep or independence, and when injections and physiotherapy no longer help. Age matters less than how much the joint affects your life. Seeing a surgeon early does not commit you to surgery.

What makes robotic knee replacement different?

Mr Edmondson uses both MAKO and CORI robotic-assisted systems. MAKO uses a pre-operative CT scan to create a detailed 3D plan of the knee, while CORI can map the knee during surgery without requiring a pre-operative CT scan. Both systems provide additional information about the patient’s anatomy and ligament balance to assist accurate bone preparation, implant positioning and alignment. The surgeon remains in control throughout the procedure.

Do I need a GP referral to book a consultation?

No referral is needed to book privately as a self-pay patient. If you are using private insurance, your insurer may ask for a referral, so it is worth checking with them first.

Will my health insurance cover everything?

Cover depends on your policy and insurer. Many procedures are covered, and self-pay fixed price packages are also available. The practice can help you check what your policy includes before you commit.
