Hip replacement recovery: your week-by-week guide

Mark Blog 6

The first 48 hours

Thanks to enhanced-recovery protocols, most patients are on their feet with a frame the same day as surgery. Pain is controlled with a combination of local anaesthetic and simple medication — most people are surprised how manageable it is.

Weeks one to two

You will be walking indoors comfortably, doing daily physiotherapy exercises, and your wound will be checked. Swelling and tiredness are normal — your body is doing serious work behind the scenes.

Weeks four to six

Most patients are driving again, back at desk-based work, and walking outdoors without aids. This is when confidence really returns.

Three months and beyond

Golf, cycling, swimming and doubles tennis are all realistic goals. Higher-impact sport is a conversation we have individually — your implant, your anatomy and your ambitions all play a part.
